3 Creative Summer Family Photo Ideas to Do in Boston

If you’re a family who has been having professional photos taken every year for a long time now, you might be feeling an itch to shake things up. While I love dreamy lifestyle family photos in fields as much as the next guy, sometimes you just need a change, and there’s no better time to do that than summer. Luckily, there’s a whole slew of options in Boston that make it really easy to get creative for family photos. The tips below can help you get started on planning your out-of-the-box session!

1. Get in the Water!

Whether you’re getting in the water at the very end of your session like this mama below,

or incorporating water from start to finish, getting wet for family photos can be so.much.fun! Not only does it keep kids smiling ear to ear, but water-filled family photos are beautiful! The two images below are actually of my own kiddo playing at one of the many amazing splash pads in Waltham. The way that golden hour light streams in through the water droplets is just stunning, IMHO. In fact, it inspired a client of mine to book a splash pad/playground session for this summer! We’ll be over at a different park in Cambridge, and I’m PUMPED about it!

2. Get in a Boat!

Boats aren’t exactly accessible to everyone, but it doesn’t have to be a fancy one by any means! It can be a boat for the whole fam (and maybe you can take it to a secret location like we did for the session seen in the first two images below :)), or a simple canoe or kayak. Don’t own one? Think about renting one at Charles River Canoe & Kayak or the South Bridge Boat House in Concord. Your photographer can stand on the shore with a zoom lens and photograph your family from there!

3. Get Moving!

Movement is an integral part of all family photo sessions in every season, but when the weather’s nice, your family’s favorite activities can easily be incorporated. From sports to fishing to zip-lining in the backyard, we can capture it all!
