Boston Newborn Photography

This might be hard to believe coming from a photographer, but I almost didn’t book newborn photos when my oldest was born. Then, a few weeks before my son’s due date, an email landed in my inbox from a local photographer whose work I really admired — asking if she could book me for a family session. I took this as a fairly obvious sign from the universe that I should in fact have some family newborn photos taken, and asked if she’d be interested in a trade. She was, and the rest is history. We had the session, I fell completely in love with the photos, and I still fawn over them when I walk past them in our hallway nearly nine years later.

Here’s the honest truth about newborn sessions, though: you’ll probably be tired, your clothes won’t fit quite right, and there’s a decent chance you’ll be fighting to keep your eyes open mid-session. And it will still be worth every single penny. With a lifestyle approach, there’s also zero pressure to rush — we can schedule your session whenever feels right for your family, whether that’s when your baby is a week old or two months old. It’ll be just perfect either way.

How far in advance should I book my newborn session?
It’s best to *not* do what I did as a first-time mom and plan a session at the last possible minute, ha. I suggest reaching out when you enter your third trimester to see how far out I’m booking, as I do take a limited number of sessions each month. However, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t bother to reach out if you are well past that point or if your baby has already arrived! The winter months tend to book up more slowly, and in the summer I actually have a lot more availability since I am off from my teaching job.

Do you have a studio or do you only go to clients’ homes?
I don’t have a studio and generally only do in-home lifestyle newborn sessions. However, if you really like my work but don’t think your home is suitable, I could find a studio to rent that has a homey feel and that could be an option for an additional fee. Or, if your due date is during the warmer months, we could talk about an outdoor newborn session. More than likely though, your home will make for the perfect backdrop!

How old should my baby be for our session?
Since my approach is lifestyle, it is baby-led and includes a lot of family photos, which means we don’t need your newborn to be super sleepy for any sort of studio-style posing. I photograph newborns up to 6 weeks old pretty regularly, and occasionally up to 8 weeks! I’d say my average is actually around the one-month mark.

How long do sessions take?
I budget for 2 hours just in case we need it, but these days I’m generally done in about 90 minutes. If you have a fussy little one, we may need closer to 2 hours for soothing breaks. Families with an older sibling or two may also need more time.

What should we wear?
I’ll send you tips and tricks leading up to your newborn session for how you can best prepare, and this will include wardrobe guidance!

What’s your turnaround time?
I deliver a small preview gallery to all of my clients within 3 days of their sessions (but usually within a day or two!). Finally galleries are generally delivered two weeks after, but contractually I do allow myself up to 4 , *just* in case. However, I’ve never needed a whole month in my 13 years in business.
