The Dos and Don’ts of Fall Photo Clothing!

Ah… crisp, cool days are back and the smell of fall is in the air. Wait, just kidding, it’s 85 degrees here in Boston. Despite the fact that it still feels like August, the busy fall photo season *has* arrived, and that means it’s time to start planning those outfits! I’ve written blog posts about summer and spring clothing before, but it’s time I finally get around to whipping up some fall-specific tips. Here are all my dos and donts for your family photo session wardrobe!

DO

  • Consider a neutral palette, or a neutral palette with a pop of color like green (just not bright kelly green!), rust, mustard yellow, or any jewel tone.

  • Figure out mom’s (or moms’!) outfit(s) first, and then build the rest from there. And if you’re a mom reading this, I suggest making sure you love your outfit from all angles, so don’t be shy in front of that mirror while outfit-planning ;).
  • Related to the above point- do consider a long, somewhat flowy and forgiving dress. These tend to look flattering from all angles and provide movement to your photos. If you’re not a dress person, that’s okay. Long skirts and sweaters are an awesome fall option, as well as jumpsuits, overalls (if you’re feeling a little adventurous), or a tried-and-true pair of jeans and a cute sweater.
  • Consider putting one or two people in subtle patterns, while also tying in some texture to at least one outfit!
  • Put everyone (including yourself!) in shoes you can walk in, whether that’s in a grassy field or a cobblestone street in Boston.
  • Consider an accessory or two (suspenders are always cute on baby and toddler boys, as well as cozy scarves and hats for colder sessions).
  • Put shorts or bloomers underneath dresses on girls :). You’ll thank me later!
  • This one’s for the dads! An undershirt isn’t a bad idea for dads wearing button downs or sweaters. It’s not uncommon for dads to throw their kids up in the air during photo sessions, which  often  exposes  their  mid-sections.
  • Lastly, please prioritize warmth come November (or whenever it starts to get chilly!). I promise layers can look cute when done right, and nothing is less cute than a freezing cold, screaming toddler, ha! This family hit their layered look out of the park with a little help from Zara Kids!

DON’T

  • Put everyone in matching colors. You’ll blend together like a blob ;).
  • Have multiple busy patterns in the mix. It’ll be too distracting. Which leads to my next point…
  • Wear distracting, bold colors like magenta, fire engine red, cobalt blue, etc. These not only can cast colors on skin, but they’re simply distracting to the eye. Let’s put the focus on your family’s beautiful faces!
  • Go for a dress shorter than calf-length as they don’t work great for seated photos or active sessions.
  • Wear shoes you can’t chase after your kids in or walk comfortably in!
  • Worry about bothering your photographer with clothing questions! She would love to help ;).
